DOES HIGH SELF-ESTEEM CAUSE BETTER
PERFORMANCE, INTERPERSONAL SUCCESS,
HAPPINESS, OR HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES?
Summary—Self-esteem has become a household word.
Teachers, parents, therapists, and others have focused efforts
on boosting self-esteem, on the assumption that high selfesteem
will cause many positive outcomes and benefits—an
assumption that is critically evaluated in this review.
Appraisal of the effects of self-esteem is complicated by
several factors. Because many people with high self-esteem
exaggerate their successes and good traits, we emphasize objective
measures of outcomes. High self-esteem is also a heterogeneous
category, encompassing people who frankly accept
their good qualities along with narcissistic, defensive, and
conceited individuals.

Model of Healthy Self-Esteem
It is important to recognise the progress that you've made, and as your self-esteem improves, it is helpful
and appropriate to pat yourself on the back and celebrate your achievements. This will encourage you to
keep going – to keep practising and applying the new skills you have learned.

Building Self-esteem A Self-Help Guide
Most people feel bad about themselves from time to time. Feelings of low self-esteem may be triggered by being treated poorly by someone else recently or in the past, or by a person’s own judgments of him or herself. This is normal. However, low self-esteem is a constant companion for too many people, especially those who experience depression, anxiety, phobias, psychosis, delusional thinking, or who have an illness or a disability.

caring for myself
Self Esteem is defined as the beliefs that you hold about
yourself and the value that you place on those beliefs.
For example, a person with low self-esteem might say to
himself, “I am stupid and that makes me a bad person.”
A person with higher self-esteem might say, “I have a
little trouble learning some things, but that is OK because
I am good at other things.”
